What is the rise of the dumbphone and its link to live events?

Event visitors are looking for genuine connection and want to fully immerse themselves in music, theatre, or culture. Technology can offer a lot of convenience in this regard. The solution lies in smart, invisible technology such as wristbands that enable digital functionality without smartphones disrupting the experience.

In an era where smartphones have become an integral part of our lives, a counter-movement seems to be emerging. Dumbphones, or feature phones, devices similar in functionality to simple mobile phones from the 1990s and early 2000s, are making a remarkable comeback.

This trend reflects a kind of digital detox, where more and more people are choosing the simplicity of a dumbphone over attention-demanding smartphones.

At Tactile, we recognize this need for digital detox at events such as festivals, where visitors increasingly seek an escape from the digital world and a renewed focus on the experience itself.

Why dumbphones?

Dumbphones are becoming increasingly popular. They are limited to basic functions such as calling and texting, although some models offer limited internet access and a small number of apps. This simplicity addresses the frustration caused by attention-demanding smartphones.

Think of infinite scrolling on social media and other apps. Endlessly scrolling through feeds and consuming content can be addictive and can quietly increase screen time. Dumbphones, on the other hand, limit these possibilities, removing much of that temptation.

Beyond reducing screen time, dumbphones also offer a sense of simplicity and minimalism. In a world where technology is becoming increasingly complex, their straightforward user experience can feel refreshing.

The rise of the dumbphone is therefore a response to the complexity and overstimulation of modern technology. It highlights a growing desire for a more conscious and balanced relationship with our devices, and our attention.

Live events without digital distraction

The growing popularity of festivals and live events can also be seen as a response to digital overload and a desire for authentic human connection. These are moments where we break away from daily routines and fully immerse ourselves in music or theatre, sharing unforgettable experiences together.

In a world dominated by smartphones, live events offer an opportunity to put those devices aside and be fully present.

In 2018, I attended a concert by the rock artist, Jack White in Las Vegas, where phones had to be locked in sealed pouches before the event. These pouches were only opened after the concert ended.

This welcome sense of freedom does come with a trade-off: the digital world also brings convenience. A selfie with friends and Jack White in the background can be a great memory, and at concerts in the Netherlands, I usually pay for my drinks with Apple Pay.

Tactile’s commitment to meaningful live experiences

At Tactile, we have a clear mission: to offer the benefits of the digital world to live event visitors in a natural, distraction-free way. Our system uses wristbands that visitors receive upon entry. Throughout the event, all interactions with the digital world can be handled simply by tapping the wristband against a scanner. Whether it’s payments, voting for music, or saving photos from a photobooth to a personal account everything happens seamlessly, without the need for smartphones.

This wristband system strikes a balance between avoiding digital distractions and leveraging the advantages of technology. It allows festival-goers to focus fully on the experience, the people around them, and the power of live music without constantly engaging with their phones. The rise of distraction-free live events marks a shift toward real human connection and appreciation of shared moments. It enables people to be fully present, enjoy the music, and create meaningful memories. At Tactile, we remain committed to developing technology that supports and enhances these valuable live experiences without the distractions of the digital world.

Conclusion

Live events are about connection, emotion, and shared moments. By using technology in a subtle and intelligent way, without smartphone distraction,  you enhance the experience instead of interrupting it.

With innovative solutions like smart wristbands, you combine convenience and efficiency with full focus on the moment.

Would you like to organize an event with an efficient system, without people being glued to their phones?
